The Wait
« on: July 09, 2016, 09:30:28 PM »
Hi all

Have just placed order with Kuanho Li as per below, as the title suggests The Wait (fairly decent Killing Joke song to boot) begins. I did read of someone who had enquired about ventilation path diffuser to direct more air towards the drum of their sold drum unit, thoughts anyone?

Huky 500 T Solid drum  $1180 with quick connect
IR stove propane $99
Exhaust hood $49
MET probe $18
ET probe $18   both analogue & digital probe interchangeable
Extra tray $16
Extra fan $48
Extra funnel $14
Shipping $186

Total USD $1628

Nice one,
Regan.

Congrats!
Your going to be impressed!

As to modding airflow, although I haven't read this yet it appears to be an advanced change. Controlling the airflow with the built in damper is challenging, but possible. If your paper logging a simple lamp dimmer works just fine, but interferes with datalogging.

Learning how to control the air, gas, IR stove and produce acceptable results is the first leg Huky roasting. Having some experience on another gas machine is a big help, so is data-logging.

Adding the Variac eliminates any airflow control issues, but conversely adds way more choices. My personal opinion is 0%, 25%, 50%, and 75% air flow setting is adequate. This can easily be done with the simple dimmer.

Hi hankua

thanks for the message & encouraging words, I am excited at the prospect of roasting on the Huky. I have already ordered the Phidget 1048 with the idea of using Artisan & I will give the installed damper a crack before dropping more coin on the Variac. There is a local store this way that stocks the Variac (0-260 VAC) at $240 AUD so will be no doubt heading there as curiosity will surely get the best of me.

Cheers!

That's expensive for a Variac, we have some members using a router controller and datalogging without problems. Maybe worth exploring?

I had an idea to install a dial for the damper by fitting a large washer over the 1/2" boss holding it. A 1/2" stop collar also fits but needs to be machined or sanded down for clearance with the wood handle.

Here's the air flow measurements I did several years ago with the Huky damper.

Based on these one could roast from charge to EOD with the damper closed, then ramp to 1C with the damper cracked. At around 180c it's time to make pre-1C adjustments, 200c is generally where it starts. In this strategy most adjustments are made with gas pressure until the onset of 1C or just before.

I normally don't go over 75% air except as a last resort for temperature control. Huky tends to suck beans out of the drum into the attached pipe.

Damper
Open-14 m/s 100%
3/4-13 m/s 92%
1/2-10 m/s  71%
1/4- 6 m/s  42%
cracked-3.4 m/s 24% (closing the damper gently until it stops)
closed-1.5 m/s 11%

I had considered using the damper until ingot the huky and realized how crummy the quality is. Even if you grease that baby it's so small and stiff and clunky it would be unpleasant at best to use it with the idea of precision and consistency. MAYBE for the simple enjoyment of roasting maybe it would suffice.

This is the fan controller I use- without any interference in the datalogging:
