Huky 500T 1086
« on: July 22, 2016, 03:14:29 PM »
Hi all
I was pleasantly surprised to take delivery of my Huky on 23.07.16 with a 12 day turnaround from purchase. Kuanho was a pleasure to deal with, prompt, concise & matter of fact.
I hope to have flame to drum by day's end 23.07 & evaluating roasts soon after.
Cheers.

Rhawea,

If you don't mind me asking so late from your original post ...

What options did you specify for this order? Am I seeing an extra funnel and bowl, or are those standard with the 500T?

Thanks,

-Chris

Hi Chris,
I did indeed add the funnel, bowl and fan (cooling tray) as extras as it provides independent cooling of the roast from the chaff collector/air flow exhaust, the extra funnel is not a necessity but I find it aesthetically pleasing and it helps with packing.

Hope this helps?
Regan.

Perfect, Thank you! Your setup is almost exactly what I plan to place my order as. Any tips for a newbie, things you would've done differently?

Thanks,
Chris

Safety is top of my list
- fire extinguisher/fire blanket
- flue your Huky well & use in well ventilated setting
- some cheap coffee on hand for seasoning (I used 4x250g charge roasts) I let them go beyond 2nd crack but not so far as to ignite, when you have reached end of roast leave the coffee rotating in the drum until cooled (yep for all 4 roasts)
- will you be using Artisan via a Phidget or..?
- do you have roasting/barista/cupping experience

There has been a glut of great coffee here in Auckland NZ lately so to be honest it has been at least 4 months since I put flame to drum, I am having trouble sourcing good & reasonably priced raw material as well. I have a kg of Geisha from Finca Santa Teresa (Panama) that I am want to get done so may get to it next week or 2.

Kuanho Li is very easy & accomdating to deal with, good luck & cheers for reaching out I am yet to have a brew so I best remedy that

Regan

I've been roasting for about two years in my oven, which is by no means actual roasting experience, but has introduced me to the terminology and practice. I'm a bit of a brew nerd as well, having AeroPress, Rok, Chemex, Cold Brew, Drip Tower, French Press and Mocapot living in my kitchen.

Haven't decided artisan or phidget, but will choose one or the other.

Thanks for the safety tips. I had planned to set up in my basement and use tubing to vent to outside, but could also use the garage if it gets too smokey.

I've been sourcing from la bodega recently, they sell in 50lb bags, so you have to commit, but it makes the cost more reasonable as a result.

This is not an either or.  If you are going to use Artisan you will need either a Phidget or some other sensor to transfer data to Artisan.

Thanks, I realized that sometime after I posted. Meant to say Phidget or the Center 304. Definitely doing Artisan either way.
