Do small beans lock up the drum?
« on: August 26, 2016, 10:50:55 PM »
Enjoying my Huky very much. I'm about a year in, about a hundred roasts, using sweetmarias exclusively. Roasting a Sumatra from sm's this week and the drum locked. Never seen this before. Fortunately the roast was just finishing and when I opened the door to dump it unjammed and started turning again. Only explanation I can think of is that small beans can get jammed under a rotor or something. The drum seems too full at one pound. Beans bounce up inside the fill tube so I have to take the piping off and rock the machine back on its hind legs to get all the beans back in the drum. I always order the sm's coffee in five lb bags, so I'm going to start dividing those bags into six batches instead of five and see how it goes. Thanks again for all the help I've received here. Barry.

Sumatran beans are notorious for having dirt, grit, small stones etc. in them. Whatever jammed your drum can also jam up your grinder. Do beware. Now, it could also have been a split bean wedging in between the drum and the front plate.
Even though quality control plays part of it, I know that SM does have very good quality control so I don't think they are to blaim. Again, the way they handle the coffee in Indonesia is way different from the very high quality you get from e.g a Costa Rican. It litterary goes with the territory. :) (It's very common practice to dry the beans directly on the ground in Indonesia. I.e it does not only go with the territory, you often get a piece of it with your beans too... :) )

Now, dare I roast even lighter?

Yup! Something nasty went through my Mazzer today also. 'Special' stuff this Sumatran. Love the earthy tones of the coffee, even if it literally comes with some earth. Thanks for the help.

it sounds like you had a problem with increased volume, or greater than normal; and its possible for a bean fragment to jam between the front edge of the drum and faceplate.
