Safe to drink the first batch? Does Huky need seasoning?
« on: October 28, 2016, 06:50:39 AM »
Hello,

I actually just got my Huky and I roasted two batches. I've been seeing on Youtube that people season their roasters to coat the inside with coffee oil and clean out the manufacturing oil. Is that the case with Huky? Should I season my huky and not consumed my first batch?

I want to hear your thoughts. Thanks!!
I have no idea what I'm doing most of the time

According to Mr. Li, the roaster has been cleaned before shipping; safe to drink the first batch. Seasoning the machine is a good learning exercise, seeing what temps your first and second crack occur. When the roast is in 2C, it's a good idea to have the gas very low or off.

I never seasoned.
First roasts are seldom great.
Your HUKY will season itself as you learn.

Poor quality or seasoning beans only re-enforce your suspicions that you aren't doing a very good job.
It's not a good idea to buy the most expensive beans when you are starting, but make sure the quality is good enough that you can determine whether it is your roasting or the bean that is disappointing you.

I didn't season mine either.
I had some high quality beans from Guatemala that I roasted first, then on to an Ethiopian I got from a local roaster that I loved how he roasted.
You may mess up a batch or two as you learn, but don't make the assumption that it'll happen for sure.
The Ethiopians I roasted did great in a blind taste test next to some professional roasts.

The inside (and outside which makes a difference too) doesn't have any kind of coating to make a difference when starting up with the roaster. While it's a good practice to start up with (quite) a few run(s) of "waste" beans to get to know the roaster, it should be good to start with.
Most or all of the advice I've read on the 'net, here and otherwise, tells me to go deep into 2C (french, italian, spanish, wienna, ---, cremation territory) to extract the oils from the beans. Preferably with a full charge of beans. While I did just that with both of my drums, I tasted the result and it was at least drinkable. I don't recall it having notes of any machine oil or anything like that. On the other hand, they were pretty bad roasts to begin with, and with pretty stale beans... I.e nothing to write home about in the first place. But again, at least when I started up with the perforated drum, having a year++ of experience, the coffee didn't have anything strange about it apart from being roasted way too long.
Now, dare I roast even lighter?
