I'm taking the plunge so to speak
« on: November 16, 2016, 05:59:55 PM »
I am really close to realizing this Huky reality. I wanted to post my list so as to get input before I send Mr. Li an e-mail.

Purchases from Mr. Li:
Huky 500T - solid drum with 72 rpm motor (allow conversion to different motor and drum)
IR stove, propane
extra sieve/tray
extra fan
exhaust bowl
extra funnel
48 rpm motor
perforated drum
probes for ET, BT and MET

Things I will purchase apart from Mr. Li:
Variac
power strip
propane tank
exhaust hose and connection for exhaust
Phidget - 1048 with casing

Any suggestions on other things to consider? I will be roasting indoors but will have the exhaust go out a cracked window in my living room.

I'm excited!!  ;D

C O O L ....
Be sure you specify whether you want your 'second' motor just bare or whether you want it mounted in a housing.  Extra motor = $18.  Extra motor set = $78.

Possibly some extra ventilation; one pound charges create more fumes.
The way I would approach this, is to build a plywood insert and glue in an automotive stub pipe, and a fan. Maybe one of those horizontal window fans or a smaller electric fan fit into a cutout.

Hey everyone,

I'm still trying to make my final decisions so any advice would be amazing!
Here is where I'm stuck.
Drum, solid or perforated I'm leaning toward solid
ET probe, I see a lot of people suggest to go digital but a lot of photos I see are with the analog. Is it much more useful and user friendly to have the digital.

I'm going to go with the probes from Mr Li as I don't picture myself using the computer for every roast.

Thanks everyone!

Can't you have both? I like that idea, I think using the analog therm as a quick reference for the temp changes makes sense but if I get an analog therm for ET would it negate the ability to have an analog one too?

Mr. Li will ship the roaster with analog ET unless you specify digital.  I'd be curious to know how many people are actually roasting with analog ET.  I think you're still going to need some sort of digital device/computer to get BT and/or MET readings. Maybe someone else will weigh in on this.

Yeah I guess I am just thinking about making temp adjustments via the analog reference as it is right by the gas valve and this would negate having to glance over at a screen during this process, it's a nominal thing. I was just thinking if it isn't a hassle to have both then theres not reason not to but I'm not going to go just analog regardless.

Sure you can roast with the analogue dial, but a digital BT readout would still be necessary at least for the drop. Along with a stopwatch and timer to mark the total roast time and roast development time.

You remove the Analog ET gauge and replace it with an adapter and the digital probe. It's not hard to do, but at any given time you will have one or the other installed.

Oh yeah I will ;) I have been receiving the proprietaries in as well. Question: Does the Variac weigh like 20 lbs? I got mine in and it is way heavier than I thought but I could have been thinking it would be an itty bitty thing. LOL!

Now that I've given up using it for roasting, I'm gonna use mine as a doorstop :-))))

Yeah I accidentally got the 2000VA instead of the 1000W one (are VA's and W's the same things, like I know VA is for volt/ampers right and W is for Watts). Basically I got an overpowered Variac, lol ugh. Does does the 1000W one weigh less? I would assume so right?

Just saw the model readouts and I guess the single outlet model is four pounds lighter and $13 less, it's 1000W specd for one outlet inout but the double outlet makes for double the output I guess?
