Rainfrog Roastmaster with Phidget Wireless

(1/2) > >>

navystan:
I didn't see anyone who has this setup, so I'm starting a thread for those using Rainfrog's Roastmaster iPad app.  There are several ways to use the iPad.  I choose to use Phidgets which involve the 1048 sensors connected to the probes and then this setup is connected to a small mini-computer Phidget called the SBC3.  The SBC3 has the 1048 sensor connected to it.  Also connected to the SBC3 is a wireless adapter.  These three parts (SBC3, 1048 sensor, wireless adapter) allow the probes to communicate wirelessly to the iPad and thus to the Roastmaster app.

I did my first roast using this setup today and know I have a lot to learn.  Not as easy as Artisan, but I think once I fully understand how to use  it, it will be more comprehensive than Artisan.  Plus, I will have a smaller footprint around my roast setup.  I plan to use the flexible arm stand to hold the iPad.

I will use this thread to post my lessons learned and hope others using Roastmaster and Phidgets will post their experiences and tips.

Been using this setup for almost 2 years now.  Absolutely love it, it works really well!  The hardware and the software are rock solid!

More practice using the Huky with the Roastmaster iPad app  So far, I really like it.  Notice my setup with the flexible arm for hands free operation and clutter free on the workspace.  Just need to learn how to setup control events based don temperature vs. time.  Shows a nice RoR.

JDP:
Is it possible to connect the phidget to an iPad with a lightning cable?

The short answer is no, as there are no drivers for the Phidget installed (I don't know if there exists any such drivers) on the Ipad. Else I wouldn't mind it at all, as all it would take is a "Lightning to USB Camera Adapter", which would make life easy if using a Phidget 1048 with RoastMaster.
That is a question for either the forum on the RoastMaster site or possibly the support folks at Phidget.
