Decaf bean/roasting recommendations
« on: December 13, 2016, 12:47:44 PM »
I promised myself that I would never roast decaf, but my in-laws only drink decaf, and they'll be in town for the holidays, so I thought I would break my rule once a year.

Does anyone have any recommendations for green beans (preferably from Bodhi Leaf)?

Any tips on roasting?  I can't seem to find any profiles on Artisan Coffee Alliance.

Thanks!

Coffee shrub says to roast decaf beans how you would roast regular beans. Rolling 1C is almost inaudible and decaf beans are darker than regular beans, so your sense of smell is your only way to let you know how far along the roast is. When I get that vinegar-like sting to my nose when smelling the tryer, that's usually a good sign that I am in 1C territory.

I've roasted some 10 lbs of a Colombia Huila Mountain Water Decaf for a friend (I sourced it in the UK, smallbatchroasters.co.uk).
As decaf is very hard to find in Sweden, there isn't much to compare with, apart from one specialty coffee roaster and of course some undrinkable brown sludges from one of the big dragons. Decaf greens are at the moment not to be found in Sweden.
Anyhow, I digress... that Huila turned out quite good (i.e. at least as good or maybe even better than the specialty version available in some shops...) As Turboner says, 1C is rather quiet, but it's there. I've read the SweetMarias comments on Decaf too, so I knew beforehand about the differenties.
I guess it's a good idea to treat the beans as low-grown and somewhat more delicate to high charging heat etc. (due to the decaffeination process).
Now, dare I roast even lighter?

My wife can only drink decaf - and I have a few decaf customers.  I have been roasting a Costa Rica Swiss Water Decaf from Bodhi for a while although I am just about out of it.  I find tha tthere are slight differences in heat required and timing for the decaf beans but I have been getting some great results.  I taste everything I roast to make sure the quality is there - even the decaf.  Here's a recent profile that turned out really nicely with those Costa Rica Beans.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions!

I just ordered both the Costa Rican and Columbian beans from Bodhi, and will roast them as soon as they arrive next week.
