19v power adapter
« on: January 23, 2017, 01:35:30 PM »
I have a laptop power adapter with a DC output of 19v 3.42amp that brings the 72 rpm Huky motor down to around 58 rpm.  Is this safe to use with this motor?  Stock Huky adapter is 24v 2.0amp.

Thanks!

I've done that and so have others. I remember a few threads over at Home-Barista.com on this subject, which inspired me to try this out.
I used a HP inkjet printer power adapter, which came in at similar specs as the one you describe.
If you go for lower voltage than 24V you will loose a bit of torque (Swedish: "vridmoment"... :) ). That is not a problem unless beans get stuck between the drum and the front plate. (Usually broken beans from either low quality dried lots or maybe "Old Aged Sumatra") I had a couple of incidents like this, but with good quality beans you're fine.

(On the subject, I'm looking forward to the part in user "beananimal" experiments where he shows how the beans move in the drum. He's only done it with a 72rpm so far, but intends to run a series of tests with a 48rpm motor too. Adjusting the voltage is the easiest way to go for that experiment... ;) )
Now, dare I roast even lighter?

Thanks for the reply.  I thought it should be OK, but wanted to double check.  Number 938 arrived without the stock power adapter so I figured I'd be still able to roast with this laptop adapter.

Is it just me or does it seem that the 72 rpm motor is fastr then most roasters?  When I see vidoes of other roasters viewing windows, it seems the beans are moving much slower.  Does the Huky need such a fast motor because of it's size?

The 72rpm motor is an "invention" by SlickRock some years ago. (You can read all about it in his excellent report/review over at Home-Barista.com. A 3 piece part written some 3-4 years ago.) Before him ordering this "special" motor and "special solid drum" it was all 48rpm with perforated drums.

I have since received the standard 24v adapter and will start learning the roaster with that.
Now to wait for my 50mbar regulator, Phidgets and fan controler... :)
