J Pipe thermal resistant mod
« on: March 08, 2017, 08:39:57 PM »
My first Huky mod I thought I would post in case it is useful for others.  I found it cumbersome to use an oven mitt or heat resistant glove when working with my J tube.  So I crafted this mod...

I used 6ft sisal rope.  I whipped the ends.  Then used same whipping knot to wrap pipe.  No more glove needed.

I like this mod because one less thing I need to fumble with during roast, and the sisal compliments the wood trim.

so, how do you clean pipe?

although I have the T-pipe setup, I would think you have to periodically clean the inside of the pipe.  I use a sonic cleaner and dump the whole thing in.  I was a little worried I might affect the wood handle parts, but so far so good.

So do newer J pipe Huky's have the longer J pipe?  Placement of the chaff collector on mine is very limited.  A longer horizontal section on the J pipe would certainly help.

LOL.  Look here and see what the J pipe looked like when it really was short....

 ;)

There was a conversation a couple of years ago about lengthening the J pipe even further.  If I remember, Mr. Li tried it and reported that the extra weight of the longer tube made the whole roaster unstable (and therefore dangerous).

so, how do you clean pipe?

I did full clean when I got it two months back, but have not had to do such a thorough cleaning since.  It is not permanent.  Just un-tie/wrap it.

Regarding J-Tube.  I was going to purchase new and really wanted the short J-tube that was in the referenced video, but Mr. Li said that model is not longer available.  I was thinking I really liked the small footprint.  But, then this one came up on used forum and I thought I would make due.
