average ROR ??
« on: March 27, 2017, 09:20:06 AM »
I don't know how I've managed to ignore this data that shows up at the bottom of my Artisan profile, but now that I've noticed it (along with AUC, which is a separate issue altogether), I am wondering how to interpret it.

ROR I understand.
Average ROR?  not so much.

Can someone enlighten me as to what it 'means' and/or how to interpret it ???

I'm pretty sure the Avg ROR is just a mathematical average of the ROR of each specific phase.....drying, maillard, first crack and after.

So, if I understand it correctly, it's like any other average. You take the 3 numbers, add them up, then divide by how many numbers you added up and you get your Avg ROR.  As far as how it applies to the roast, I'm not sure if it gives us much info besides just an average of how the heat was applied and temp rose throughout the 3 markers

For example, in this video, Willem Boot talks about how to get the floral notes out of floral coffees. He mentions a ROR of between 10 to 15 F every 30 secs, so 20F/M to 30 F/M (quite a spread. As usual he's quite general. I guess we get the specifics if we pay for his course :) ) I think he's talking about not going over, or under that ROR at any point in the roast, rather than an Avg.  Would others agree?
So, again I'm not sure how much info the avg ROR gives us, other than just an avg of how the heat/temp rose throughout the roast.

Here he talks specifically about ROR, but it's probably info most already know

Susan, may I ask how you are getting those numbers to show at the bottom of your profile? I think I had mine set up that way, but can't remember how I did it

The answer is in this blog entry.
