Newbie - Please review my Huky order
« on: March 29, 2017, 02:04:39 PM »
Hello,

I am new to roasting (other than air poppers), so excited to get started. I have made a list of the things I think I need, let me know your thoughts please. below my list:

1- Huky 500T - Solid drum (72 RPM motor) with Quick connect

2- Exchange ET analog thermometer for digital probe

3- extra MET probe

3- Infrared propane stove

4- Exhaust hood

5- Extra fan

6- Extra sieve/tray

7- Extra funnel

I'll also get,

Phidgets 1048 Temp sensor (plus the plastic enclosure)

I expect to be using it extensively to roast some of the delicious Yemen mocha coffee I acquired :D, some days probably 3 hours straight.

Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks

That looks like the standard order. Mr Li. will probably send you an almost exact match to your list when you first inquire and say as much.

Many people will recommend some type of fan control. This can be as simple as a dimmer switch or as complicated as a variac.

One thing I wish I had was a  second exhaust exhaust bowl so that I could pipe all the roast smells out rather than just exhaust ( I do a lot of back to back roasts). This is not something you need though, just an option I wish I had.

As Mayowarlord said, this looks like a typical order. Here is the fan control I use https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EVYGPJQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. It works pretty well. A variac is an overkill in my opinion.

Is this working well with Artisan, sans spikes?

I'm getting spikes from time to time but I never related it to the fan control.

No spikes so me so far, though I did need to reset once because my ET was falling anomalously.

Good to Hear!

I used a 5$ dimmer before getting a variac, and it spiked like crazy.

Thanks guys for your advice. I have gone through and made my purchase and last week I received the order :D :D. The fans and the motor seem to work fine but I am still putting the venting together and trying to solve the placement of the propane tank problem, As I want to keep it outside and the hose is short agghh. But the device is a beauty, like an old bond movie  8) can't wait to start roasting  ::)  ::)

Or you could purchase a smaller LP tank, leave it outside for storage; then let it warm up inside before roasting.

After much consideration I've decided to move my roasting operations to my patio outdoors. I am going to buy a patio umbrella and plastic cover for when it rains and I have 5 months from now tell it starts snowing again. less hassle.

I do my roasting in the garage, I leave the burner/lp tank/fan out there full time, and store the roaster and exhaust pipe indoors...easy enough to put together each time I roast and better protection from our hot/humid Florida environment.  Works for me, but I'm only doing a weekly roast anyway.
