Feedback please? first roast
« on: April 26, 2017, 09:32:52 PM »
Hello,

I just got my huky solid drum yesterday and finally got a chance to roast with it. I would appreciate any feedback on where I should go from here, or what I should be looking for / take notice of in the roast profile or the cupping.

I couldn't wait to try it, so I aero pressed the coffee and it is very good IMO. Rich and somewhat chocolatey. Not sour or acidic at all, not bitter (but slightly bitter aftertaste). I'm just getting started and don't really know how to explain what I am tasting.  This is a Columbian Huila Region that I got to practice on because it was cheap.

Forgot to mention, I don't have a speed controller for the fan, so I tried to control it using the valve on the exhaust pipe.

Also, I followed this guide to get started: Gregr's Guide to Achieving a Rao Curve with a Solid Drum/Fast Motor Configuration

For your first roast that is really impressive- a million times better than mine! Mine was French roast in 6 minutes because I forgot to open that valve  :o
The phases after 300F look excellent. I suggest stretching out that first phase another minute or so, even a little more. At 3:36 you may have cooked the outside a little too much and left a little too much moisture inside the beans. On a soft/low grown bean I'd expect distinct grassy/hay notes from that treatment.
You could have some fun and experiment with shorter development (beginning of first crack to drop) to bring out a brighter cup, moving the sweetness more towards fruity and away from caramel or dark chocolate. Cupping notes say there are fruit flavors in there so going a little shorter in the middle might enhance those as well. If you like a lot of body you could just stop right there and be happy, aside from lengthening the dry time.

That's a testament to your great instructions! I followed them without really understanding what I was doing. Thank you for the advice. I'm going to try what you suggest tonight.
