Issues controlling gas
« on: April 28, 2015, 06:13:15 PM »
I just got my Huky 500T about a week ago (propane). I'm struggling a little to understand how the knobs on the IR burner control the gas and flame. With the propane tank wide open, the gray flame knob effectively has what seems like 2 settings: low and high. At "low", the burner seems about half on (a small heat circle in the center of the burner), and the gauge reads 6kPa. At "high", the burner is fully hot (all red) and the gauge reads 4kPa. Now the blue knob, seems to make much smaller (very very small) adjustments. Going from all the way closed to all the way open shifts the kPa from 4 to 6 - depending on how the flame knob is set. And this much change requires VERY wide swings of the knob. As in, fully open to fully closed (several full revolutions).

Does this seem normal, or am I missing something, or is something not working correctly?

Thanks.
Randy

Just about everyone leaves the black knob at the full flame setting, and adjusts gas pressure using the blue knob (needle valve).  With the propane tank on and flame off, I get about 6kpa max pressure.  When I turn on the flame, max pressure is 4.5kpa, and I am able to pretty easily dial the pressure down to almost zero using the blue knob.

Was the flame lit when you were turning the needle valve?  It will only work if the flame is lit, and max pressure should be 5kpa or under.

What Jeff said.
Plus:  I replaced the original gauge with one which only reads from 0 - 3.75 kPa because that is the most I apply, and it makes the increments larger and easier to choose between.

Yes, flame is lit when adjusting with the needle valve. When you say "adjust the flame easily"...how easily? For me, I have to turn the valve pretty aggressively to get the kPa to adjust from, say, 5 down to 4. Several full revolutions.

Thanks for the heads up on the gauge.

I just checked- to go from 1.0kPa to just under 3.0kPa is one full 360 degree turn of the blue knob on my stock IR stove. Fine adjustments are pretty easy as the others said. I think something is wrong with your system. Might be a good idea to ask Kuanho Li if he has any idea of what is going on there.

Agree, it sounds like a needle valve issue.
