Heat sources
« on: January 05, 2015, 08:23:35 PM »
With the Huky being a gas powered unit we have many a different heat source to choose from. This thread would be a good place for those to pose questions or experiences with different heat sources.

Butane sourced:
Huky "Stock" IR burner  11.5BTU
Iwatani 35FW  "15k BTU open flame" burner

Butane cans are readily available at most international markets, sometimes referred to as Asian Markets, do not fall for the Amazon buy as you'll pay upwards of 3 times the price for a can, or 10. AVG Amazon price is around $5-$8 a can. I buy mine from LeeLee's Market for $1.19 each
I normally can get 4 to 6 roasts out of one can with my configuration.

Propane sourced:
Huky "Stock" IR burner  11.5BTU  (note you can order either from LI)
Cajun Cookware Outdoor Stove 1 Burner Low Pressure Gas Burner & Stove 20k BTU

LNG sourced:

(I know Jeff has this, need to find out the model)

Safety considerations should be at the top of your list. With the IR burner the heat is more direct and contained in the Huky, my experience so far is  the Iwatani stove can kick flames a few inches out the side of the roaster and is able to heat the outside of the roaster to red hot if kicked on full for a period of time. I have not managed to catch a roast on fire, and hope to never but having an escape route for flaming beans, or a fire extinguisher nearby should be considered.

I would like to ask anyone to fill in other sources and experiences with those sources in this thread.

If you are shopping please ask questions or concerns as well.

Source:
Iwatani Corporation of America 35FW Portable Butane Stove Burner

15,000 BTU open flame stove.
Single 8oz butane can
Magnetic lock (which does work, and sometimes at the wrong time)
Large and solid
14 wide by 12 deep, 3.5 high.
Large open flame
Carrying box (doubles as a camp stove with zero effort)

Experiences:
  • Remove the rubber feet off the bottom of your Huky or you'll melt them.
  • Super simple to set up, very powerful. Even more powerful if you vary your fan to draw in heated air. I have easily run a 1.5 pound roast (As a test) to 1c in less than 10 minutes, totally decent roast.
  • When run "wide open" will throw flames out the side of the roaster
  • A bit finiky when it comes to flame management. I usually leave it around 1 "bar" higher than half way. When adjusting the fan speed I can vary my Env Temp to rise or fall a few degrees. I tend to take the Env temp to about 470 and hover. I watch my Env temp rise and fall based on fan speed so I in turn adjust the flame to compensate.
  • It will light the chaff that falls out of the front of the drum on occasion. This results in a flame up of about 15 seconds. Doesn't effect roaster temp just puts off a little smoke on the front when it ignites. The chaff catching fire is no more than 2 to 3 inches of a flame.
  • The magnetic lock has backfired on me twice. The burner uses a little piece of metal to warm the can while being used as butane gets cold while coming out of the can. This increases pressure and also makes it more consistant to the flame. Problem happened when the Roaster was left idling after about 5 roasts in 80 degree weather with the gas off but the can still in the stove. The can got hot and was 'ejected' by the lock. This is by design and the can stops putting out gas. However the cans clearly say not to store above 100 or 110 degrees. This can was clearly over that. Quick fix however was run water over it, with a hose to cool the can, which cools the liquid back down to normal. After a minute under the hose I popped the can back in and continued running. Bare in mind I live in Phoenix, it's almost always over 90 for 6 plus months, this will happen when the Huky is just radiating heat, if the gas is on and there is a flame the can runs cooler.

I didn't realize that the stock burner is butane.  :-\

I wish it was the widely popular (in the US), cheap, easy to get propane.

John, the burner I got from Mr. Li is for propane.

Someone here probably knows and will let us know whether he offers the same stove for either butane or propane, but for sure the one I got directly from him is for propane.

I just looked at my order and it only says;

"Infrared stove with Needle valve and gas pressure gauge"

I guess I'll know next week but if it's butane I'll want to convert it if possible.

It's either...You can request propane or butane...Just let Mr. Li know.

I've sent a message to Mr. Li asking him about the BTU rating for the stock [IR] stove, and if it works with butane, or if it needs any modification to work with butane. I'll post his answer here. Great thread Erik!
John- I didn't say anything about the stove when I bought the roaster, other than to please include it with my order. I went to the local giant hardware store and got a 4.5# propane tank, been using it ever since. That was 16 months ago, roughly 100 roasts. I think it was about $50 for the tank rental and gas, next time I just pay for the gas.

The price for the butane stove is $96 (same as the propane stove), plus $45 if you have it shipped by itself.
