48 or 72 rpm motor?
« on: May 25, 2015, 10:33:06 AM »
Hello all,

i'm just about ordering my Huky 500T and am pretty sure about my configuration and accessory.

But there's one question left. Which type of motor should i order pre-configured? 48 or 72 rpm? Which one comes closest to a commercial roaster? Where are the main differences?

I do not plan to order an additional motor. I decided for the solid drum.

Thank you for your help.

Regards.

Philipp

I believe it's most common to order the faster motor with the solid drum. Keep in mind that drum speed on some commercial roasters are variable. So if the flexibility of a commercial roaster is desired, going with the faster one is probably more ideal. Slowing down a motor probably trumps the effort in trying to speed one up. People have slowed the drums down with variacs (or devices like it). I couldn't tell you what long term ramifications it has though.

Kenneroast is spot on.

The original HUKY configuration was a perforated drum and the 48 rpm motor.
When Mr. Li added a solid drum option, he also added a faster motor option.

The usual combinations are perforated drum/slow motor and solid drum/fast motor.

Solid drum holds more heat and is more likely to tip (scorch) your coffee; therefore, faster motor decreases contact time and is recommended.

I would buy additional $9 motor and keep it as a spare. If yours breaks, you do not have to wait 2 weeks and spend $40 on shipping.

Thanks for your prompt answers.

Just saw, Mr Li also wrote in his first mail, the solid drum comes with the faster motor... ::)

Thanks anyway.
