Comparison roasting anyone?
« on: January 07, 2015, 04:34:33 PM »
I think there's a lot to learn from this but there's also about a million ways to go about doing it. So before we get into it we need to get some feedback from people on how they want to have this work. I'll start it off by listing some of the variables- please add your ideas!
1. Do we choose the bean and profile for all to roast and swap?
2. Do we break it up into pairs, like secret Santa- two people roast and swap the roasted results?
3. Do we break into pairs and let the two of you decide what bean and profile you want to use?
4. Do we keep it even more informal than that and just have a thread for people that have compared roasts?
5.

I think how we structure it depends at least in some part on how many people are actually interested in participating in something like this.   We only have a dozen people here so far.  We will probably grow, but for now that is our entire base, and ....how many of you here would want do play?

I don't even know if I am brave enough to play, but if I were it would seem to me that I would want everyone in the group to be roasting the same bean and for each of us to roast enough to send some to everyone in the group so we can each taste and compare to our own roasts of that bean.

That's my measly 2 cents....

I vote for 4...we all have close to same equipment, and sharing profiles could be a big help... More so than trying to duplicate a quest profile or other... Thoughts?

Yep- that is exactly why I want to do it. I'm leaning towards not trying to duplicate each other's profile but just tasting and examining the profile someone else uses- of the same bean.

I vote for all. No need to preclude one from another. Question is..do we want individual threads for each, or a catch-all thread for the activity?

Good point...I'd say individual threads for each.

Right, excellent question. Even though we're a small number of people a single thread could get messy. How about one thread for each coffee we choose to compare? The cupping notes can turn out to be a great resource for people and having the bean in the thread title will make it easier to find.
Hah- we were typing the same thing at the same time  :)

We should also do some ...uh...work...DAAMN I hate work...but we should post our current greens stash and volumes, as I suspect some of us might already have the same beans, and often one of us might have enough to spread among a group wanting the SAME coffee for testing and comparison. I would need quite a few hours to collect and post something like that...the pantry and spare room has various greens, I'm a tad spread out..organization is a neurosis I don't suffer.
