About to order/unsure of my config
« on: August 26, 2015, 06:30:50 AM »
Hi all! Great community here. I'm siked to get my Huky and have had a few email exchanges with Mr Li,  but I want to get some opinions before I purchase:

Is an open-flame + perforated drum setup a terrible idea?

Definitely not- there are a lot of people that use that configuration and are very happy with it. So if you go that way you'll get lots of help if you need it.

Oh,  great! Thanks for getting back to me.

Is Mr. Li not too keen on integrating a thermocouple for ET,  versus the analog that comes with it? That was my request and he seems like he kind of glossed over that part in his response.

It's so hard to know what he's thinking- I think it's the language difference for most of these kinds of issues but if I were you I'd keep emailing to make sure you get what you want. You can always just ask for the extra probe and install it yourself because it's really easy to do.

I love mine !!!!
There are fewer members here using that configuration which means it is a bit harder finding solutions to questions about controlling the profile/roast, but.....It is really satisfying when you figure it out, and the more of us there are to figure it out and share, the more help there will be for others coming down the pike.

That's very reassuring to hear. I was thinking the open-flame would up its convective qualities and be closer to a typical commercial roaster. Although, from what I understand, commercial drums aren't normally perforated.

So I'm gonna go ahead and order it that way, and just order an extra probe if it's easy to convert.
Again, thanks for the advice. I'll look forward to giving any insights into our uncommon configuration.:)

Having a spare thermocouple is a good idea, but you should get the digital ET thermocouple if ordered. (It comes with a brass adaptor)

I use this setup and like it very much! My stove is a Parker 5321 GP, as the IR-stove is not allowed to use where I live.

Oh dear....I know it's been a while, but I suddenly realized that I totally misunderstood the question, and so my answer was misleading.

I have and love the perforated drum, but I am using the standard IR stove, NOT an 'open flame'. :-[

Had the same question.  Mr Li said could order either analog or digital.  Just specify on your order.

So I went with the perforated drum plus the adjustable grate in between that and the heat source (not sure if this comes standard any more). And I threw in the IR stove after all. But I haven't abandoned the open-flame. I plan on experimenting with both. 48 rpm. Three digital probes.

I am siked to get roasting, but I do have to figure this Center 304 to Mac thing out. I also failed to order the usb cable with it.

I am also working on a better, albeit crude, way to stir the beans while they cool. I'll post pics when I get that figured out.

I tend toward mise en place before I do things, but I might go for it tomorrow!
