You can use just about any dimmer. The examples you show are fine. The idea is to have some precision and control and to be able to repeat the settings for the next roast or roast session. (Which is why a "Variac" with it's huge dial is nice, while a small lamp dimmer is worse.)
Now, dare I roast even lighter?

Hi edtbjon,

Just wondering if both the examples I quoted will caused spikes in artisan as what was reported by other using dimmers.

Thanks

There is no way of telling. I've used two different types of (even cheaper light bulb) dimmers and I didn't have any problems with spikes. From what I've read, the spikes issue was often caused by plugging in the laptop to the mains (same fuse as the fan).
I had Artisan being "funny" at times, but I couldn't work out what the reason was. The only time I suffered from spikes was with my Variac! But that was only once with the previous version of Artisan.
Now, dare I roast even lighter?

To control the fan I want to use PWM via artisan slider with the Tc4 setup that I built.

Anyone here know if that be possible?  To start devising it I want to know what the specs of the fan powersupply are.  Can someone post a picture of the supply or tell me it's output and plug configuration?

By the way thanks for the invitation to join, Susan!

This is from an earlier post..
Does it tell you any or all of what you need to know?

Huky's fan is Profantec (Taiwan) Model P117HBT-ETS. Available on eBay (about $75), but Mr. Li's price is a much better bargain ($40) and comes with the shiny metal grill!. Rating 115V/.23A.

AC INDUCTION motor (brushless)

And here is what I got when I Googled it:

I wanted an extra fan for cooling back to back batches so I built a fan box from an old bathroom ventilation fan with bad bearings (well they were bad).  Our HUKY arrived today but I haven't been able to test the fan control via Artisan slider, but the old one in my bean cooling box at less than 100% on the slider is audibly intermittent, rather than just being slower.

With artisan OT1 via a slider, the TC4 sends a signal than makes the AC intermittent,  the lower the percentage, the greater time spent in the off cycle.

We'll see how that functions with the HUKY fan.  Anyone else here controlled fan speed in that fashion?

I didn't realize that 400-500gr of beans would develop that much smoke when I ordered my Huky so I just went with one fan  :-\
So I tried to find an alternative to Mr.Li's fan (because of the shipping/import cost) and found a similar fan on ebay that hopefully will work for a good price 25 euro + shipping.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181656752117?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

So if anyone did the same mistake as me and just ordered one fan, this is could be an option.

EDIT: The seller stated that the fan could take heat up to 70 celsius, but it was wrong and the limit was 60 celsius which makes this fan useless for roasting since the plastic blades will start to smell burnt plastic. So do not buy this for cooling beans or for airflow through the drum.
