Title: Question about Variac

I bought the Variac 130V, 3amp.  I turn on the dial and nothing happens with the fan until 85 volts. Is this normal? The fan gets faster, but not much the more I increase the dial.

No, not normal; I can run my variac at 25V and still roast/run the fan.
