Title: Has anyone roasted Chinese coffee beans before?
Post by: Jayel on October 20, 2016, 03:25:02 PM
Just got 5 lbs of Chinese green beans, first I've seen since I started roasting, and I was wondering if anyone has any advice before I jump in.

It is the Chinese Micro-Lot Grade 1 Washed Black River Estate Produced from Burman Coffee.

Here is the description: http://www.burmancoffee.com/coffeelist/new-popups/chineseblackriver.html

For now I am going to treat it as any other washed Asian coffee but if anyone has any tips or recommendations for this particular origin, it would be greatly appreciated. I'll post my results after I cup it.

Interesting.  Haven't heard of Chinese coffee before.  I'll be interested in your cupping notes.

What was the cost?

I've heard about Chinese coffee but I've never seen/tried it before. I think this is the first year it's on the specialty market so I am very excited for it. I paid $5.59/lb for it as a special price from ordering it off of the newsletter but it regularly goes for $6.69/lb on the Burman Coffee Traders website. I just finished my first roast so I have a little more info on it.

It seems to require a lot of energy in the beginning of the roast (which I wasn't prepared for so I hit my milestones a little later than I had hoped) and had a pretty quiet first crack.

Just tried it twice and I have to say this is a very interesting coffee. I dropped it at 209C which resulted in it being highly acidic. I am having trouble identifying any specific notes but it is very floral with a milk chocolate-like finish. I look forward to playing around with this bean more maybe taking it slightly darker.
