Title: Show your roasting setup/roast cart
Post by: boss99er on January 16, 2015, 08:45:55 AM
Hey everyone, I'm in the process of building my roasting cart while I wait for my Huky to get here. Lets see everyone's roasting setup. I need some inspiration. My current plans are to have a cart type setup with everything hard mounted for better organization.

Thanks!

Hi,
december 2005 I started roasting with the Gene (I think I was one of the fist owners in GER :)), later I bought a Behmor and in in spring 2014 I had the chance to buy a (second hand) huky.
cheers blu

Wow, you aren't messing around with that variac!

You should read this thread of mine: https://www.hukyforum.com/index.php/topic,346.0.html
Your setup would look just that much better if your phidget was hidden behind your Huky :)

I'm in the middle of redoing my garage. When I do that, I'll be making a bit more of a permanent spot for my roaster. Once I finish that up in a few months, I'll post some pictures of the finished area. It probably won't look too much nicer than what I currently have, but I won't have to move my Huky when doing other projects in my garage. I should also have a permanent vent installed in my wall so I don't have to open my garage door every time I want to roast.

thusband it's the only burner I've used on the huky so I can't compare to any other. Works great! Haven't had any problems.

Very nice Daave! The phidget is no longer hanging. I mounted it under the lip of the table. I will have to take your approach for a cleaner look!

Yea so my father ended up buying me the variac as a surprise gift
Guess he thought bigger was better haha

That's right Susan!

It looks like that table is the right height for sitting but maybe low for standing.
Do you sit or stand while you roast?

Hi,
in fact i either stand or sit while roasting. You see the littler stool underneath the table? ;)
For me the table could be a bit higher as i'm rather tall myself. But this is just a workaround. I'm planning to install a work disk :)

I use an old drafting table which turns out to be a great height for standing at; and a bar stool works for perching on for some of the time....

Here's mine in the basement. Gas tank outside the door. The 2 1/2" vac hose I was using failed after about 100 roasts. You can see I'm now using a 3" aluminum flexible dryer hose that I just crushed to fit. I took these pics after doing 3 one pound roasts of that El Salvador that Bohdi Leaf recently had on sale. I use the Roastmaster app on my iPad but as I was done for the day, the ipad is upstairs. I feel like I'm finally beginning to understand how to use the solid drum.

Here's my new roasting setup. I just built this new workbench with a nook for my Huky. I used my trusty hole saw set to cut out a hole for the exhaust duct (I installed a new vent on the garage wall so the duct can be permanently installed now), a grommet for the cables, and another grommet for the propane tube. I purchased an Intel NUC PC (Running Windows 7) + wireless keyboard/mouse that will be mainly used for Artisan.

I like it because all the messy stuff is hidden below the workbench and I don't have cables and clutter everywhere.

Daave ... sweet setup! What exactly did you use for your vent?

This is my vent:
http://www.mcmaster.com/#1773k61/=zwr0oa

I used these hole saw sets (1st one for the interior garage wall & workbench wood, 2nd one for my exterior stucco):
http://www.harborfreight.com/34-in-5-in-carbon-steel-hole-saw-set-18-pc-69073.html
http://www.harborfreight.com/1-14-in-3-14-in-carbide-grit-hole-saw-assorted-set-9-pc-68116.html

Then I have a 3" cheap dryer duct from Home Depot connected to both ends with some good foil tape.

Also, I'd highly recommend these grommets (I bought these):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/400280793435

The 2" & 3" grommets have the same hole opening size, and it's plenty big to fit the stock Huky gas tube. It helps keep things really clean up on top.

Nice job. How's that control panel working out for you? What do all of the switches and knobs do again?

Is that a cyclone I see? What model is that, and how well is it working out for you?

And this looks like you're indoors when you roast. I know that my garage smells like roasted coffee for a while after roasting. Does this setup make your whole house smell awesome, or does your exhaust setup help contain it somewhat?

Nice job. How's that control panel working out for you? What do all of the switches and knobs do again?

I have 5 switches.
- Drum
- Exhaust (huky)
- Bean Cooling Fan
- Window Exhaust
- Lights
- Vari-Speed for Huky exhaust fan
- Future holes for gas pressure gauge and needle valve

The panel works AMAZING. I will NEVER go back to operating without one!

Is that a cyclone I see? What model is that, and how well is it working out for you?

Sadly, I do not have a cyclone filter. I am really heavily considering getting or making one. I roast a lot quiet frequently so I'd like to not have to imply the chaff pan every time.

And this looks like you're indoors when you roast. I know that my garage smells like roasted coffee for a while after roasting. Does this setup make your whole house smell awesome, or does your exhaust setup help contain it somewhat?

I am indoors when I roast. I'd say the room smells heavenly but my whole house does not. I say that but to get a true answer I'd have to ask a guest that comes over lol. As long as I don't forget to empty the chaff tray it does not smell too bad. lol when I forget to do that it smells a bit stronger.

I know I keep posting my pictures of my setup. But I just got some new HDR Photography software and because I love coffee and photography I had to get a picture!

Photography + Coffee roasting + early 20's = (Must be a nerd)

Not perfect by any means, lots of fingerprints, reflections, and dust. But kinda cool!

Is your Variac just attached behind the knob thing on your box, or did you actually extend the knob somehow? If you extended it, I'd be interested to know how you did that.

I think it's more along the lines of a light dimmer.

Not quite a light dimmer, but similar.  It's actually a dimmer specifically designed for controlling the speed of AC motors.  I have something similar:
http://www.levitonproducts.com/catalog/model_6616.htm (http://www.levitonproducts.com/catalog/model_6616.htm).  In my opinion the motor dimmers should last longer and be better for the motor than a lamp dimmer.  I see that many people use the lamp dimmers and they work fine, but I prefer to use an actual motor controller.  Here is a video demo of mine:

Starting the process here of figuring out a wheeled roasting cart.  Naturally the propane tank will reside on a lower shelf, probably covered on three sides with holes for tubing.  And one of the priorities is to keep it as clean as possible up on top.

Daave, is it possible to have a pic of your finished set-up?

The only one on HF that I can see that went for a rolling cart was MJ5150 but no pics of his final design.  I'm going nuts roasting every other day from the back deck during nice weather, to the carport when its raining, to the utility room when its below 57 degrees.

Have to go with a wooden design to make it compact enough to zip thru doorways easily and accomodate Phidget, etc.
Any ideas appreciated.  Thanks

Daave above:

First of all went back and read your thread about routing cables and hoses.  Have the same type vent hose as yours but yours seems so much more neatly mounted coming out of the exhaust.  That is 3" dryer vent hose, is it not, that you reduced to fit the 2" Huky exhaust nozzle?

Could you post a pic of how you used your black plastic grommets please.  If I mount a fidget below lip of a cart would definitely need something like those to route wiring through after using hole saw.  Not to mention propane hoses, etc.

Tomc shows a nice metal cart over at HB but its only 17 5/8" wide and no way to mount propane in the bottom.  And it is unnecessarily scissor type with a superfluous hydraulic jack   Plus need small pneumatic tires instead of hard plastic ones that are shown.
Thanks

Here's a few close-up pictures. Let me know if you need any more.

Yeah, that's a 3" dryer vent hose. I just used a generous amount of foil tape to hook it up to the 2.5" Huky exhaust nozzle. It's really not that much bigger, so it's easy to just attach it. I got that idea from Susan. For the 3" dryer hose hole, I used a 3.5" hole saw. It fit really easily down that hole, and you'll notice in my close up picture that the hole is just a little larger than the hose.

Those extra cables dangling off of my computer monitor are for hooking up other computers I might be working on. It has network, sound, and a few different video cables. This is my multi-purpose workbench after all :)

love that exhaust hose.  Mine flares up from 2 to 4" and is really messy.  Looked for one like yours but so far no luck.
Even tried Lowes and Home Depot and still searching.

Can't quite make out how its attached but looks like you used a clamp to secure it.
Great job.

Hey Gene

I actually got mine from Lowes. It's this 3-in x 96-in Aluminum Semi-Rigid Flexible Duct (http://www.lowes.com/pd_28878-85334-FXL0001_0__?k_clickID=7bd6f8ed-086b-4410-9d5a-3a95199c2952&store_code=199&productId=3133685&selectedLocalStoreBeanArray=%5Bcom.lowes.commerce.storelocator.beans.LocatorStoreBean%4044044404%5D&storeNumber=0199&kpid=3133685&cm_mmc=SCE_PLA-_-RoughPlumbingElectrical-_-DryerVentAndFlexDuct-_-3133685%3AIMPERIAL&CAWELAID=&CAWELAID=1023609991).

Then I couldn't find a 3-inch vent, so I bought this 4-inch dryer vent (http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0085KZNW2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00) and used a 4-in-to-3-in reducer to get it connected to the duct:

For the vent bowl (2.5-in), I couldn't find a 3-in-to-2.5-in reducer, so I made two small cuts in the duct, used some tape and clamped it to the bowl.

Another very useful addition was this 12-inch dolly, which I'm using as a base for the vent bowl and it was a perfect fit. I drilled holes in each leg and fixed it using cable ties. The wheels make it super easy to re-position it and gives room for the duct:

What gas settings seems to work with that dial?
Title: Re: Show your roasting setup/roast cart

Not sure I got your question... What do you mean by gas setting? The cajun burner is connected to a 20lb propane tank. The regulator is only .5 psi, so I can get to max 3.0kpa when fully open. Looking for a replacement, probably a high-pressure adjustable regulator that I can set to something close to 1 psi.

What dial are you referring to? The one that comes built-in I don't use. It's always fully open and the gas control is solely done using the needle valve.

That was rreally poorly worded.  Sorry.  I meant to ask how many inches or setting on the dial are you needing to roast.  On mine I have gone as high as 3.8 out of max 10 with 500 grams charge at 220C dry end at 5 - 6 min.  I am curious since your burner is essentially the same as mine.

Ok, now I got it.

So Basically, for the roast below (don't bother about the events, I screwed up a bit), I went as high as 2.5 KPa after TP and got to DE at 5:00. This was for a Ethiopia Drima Zede Natural from Bodhi Leaf, 454g and charge at 222C.

The KPa reading is in the inside of the dial and that's the one I'm using as a reference.

That is more gas flow than I use, but I chopped my stand down so perhaps the flames are a touch closer to the drum.

Thanks for satisfying my curiousity.  My gauge max is 10 in H2O and does not show kPa.

Yours look like a very good setup, congrats. Are you going to install a vent to the outside?
You're talking to me?  ;D
ATM i put the flex tube outside that window while roasting. But as there is a flue in the neighboring room, i plan to connect the tube to that flue soon.

Thanks - I don't have my Huky yet but your setup is similar to what i have in mind.  My workspace is 48 x 20 (W x D) so I think I can make it work without changing it.

I think with 20" deep you might need to have the roaster in a diagonal position so you can have space for the cooling tray.

You may very well be right.  I'll have to wait until i can actually place it on the surface before I make any decisions.  I'm using a piece of MDF mounted to shelf brackets so would be easy enough to make 4" deeper if needed.

Sorry - yes - I was talking to you  :)

In my case I installed a fixed dryer vent to the outside and taped/clamped everything. Happy so far.

Mine is also 20" in depth. This works but a few inches more would sure be nice.
The Huky sits diagonal on it and there's enough space to dump and cool the beans infront of it.

Hi guys.

This was my setup for the first 3 roasts. It worked out pretty well.

I made a simple window insert out of 1/4" plywood and installed a 4" dryer vent hood. I retrofitted a 4" to 3" duct reducer onto the fan bowl pipe; I made 4 cuts in the 3" section then started to neck down with pliers then just let the hose clamp do the rest. Due to the 45deg angle of the fan bowl pipe I had to retrofit some "stilts" onto it in order to give it some clearance.

Just saw this on reddit. Like I said there, it looks good, but I'm surprised you're roasting indoors.

Especially after doing back to back roasting for a total of over 50 batches in the last month, I can't imagine doing this anywhere I don't mind making a mess of and with good ventilation.

The mess is kinda easy to clean, now if you don't really love the lovely aroma, THAT will be hard to get rid of... :)

My setup is in the garage. It smells like coffee 24/7 now.

...Due to the 45deg angle of the fan bowl pipe I had to retrofit some "stilts" onto it in order to give it some clearance.

If by any chance you're not fully happy with your vent bowl legs, I recommend you give this a try: Shepherd Hardware 9442 12-Inch Steel Tri-Dolly (http://www.amazon.com/Shepherd-Hardware-9299-Tri-Dolly-Capacity/dp/B00004YOKC)

In my case, I've drilled each leg of the dolly and fixed it to the vent bowl legs with cable ties. Works like a charm, really helpful for vaccuum cleaning and chaff removal, as the bowl now is on wheels.

That trolly looks great, is it the 6" or 12"?

Honestly it is going to take me quite a while to get to 50 roasts. That means multiple setup and tear downs and full cleanings. I am always willing to adjust on the fly but at least through the winter months I plan to use this setup.

In the past I roasted outside but that was because the TurboCrazy had no real way to "vent."

Title: Re: Show your roasting setup/roast cart
Post by: brew on January 15, 2016, 02:59:30 PM
Hey Kody!  For the speed control I determined what I thought should be a min/max range for the fan.  I have divided that range up into 1/8ths and created event buttons for each increment.  I also took a piece of plastic and made a larger dial pointer, gluing it to the bottom of the controller knob.  This gives a little more precision making the radius of settings larger.  Now i just need to learn to roast!
Title: Re: Show your roasting setup/roast cart
Post by: rodraguirre on January 15, 2016, 03:31:30 PM
I would suggest that you also try somehow measuring your airflow efficiency for each of those settings, especially because most likely it will not be exactly proportional (50% in your dial will not be 50% airflow).

That will be really good for you when you want to replicate profiles from other people here in the forum. Helps you translate their airflows into your dial positions.

Post by: brew on January 15, 2016, 03:36:43 PM
Has anyone done that already?  I would need an anemometer I suppose.
Are the settings using the variac that linear?  Does 50% equate to 50% airflow?  I know that if I used one I would at least match what most others settings.

You gave me an idea....

Still, if you do some searching on airflow, you will find that several of us have posted the results of previous testing.

No, Variacs are not linear either. There's a post from Susan I think where she posted a table with some anemometer readings vs Variac settings. There was also some discussion (I believe in the same thread and I believe also mentioned by Susan) about getting more airflow by taping together the tray and the vent bowl to seal it.

We have been busy today,
This is our initial setup.
First roast tomorrow hopefully.
The board in the background, with the exhaust hose, will fit in the window opening.

One question, how have you guys setup your cooling tray. It seems to not fit under the drum door.
When I lift up the stove a bit, the exhaust bowl hits the needle valve dial.
When I turn the stove 90 degrees, the gas hose gets in the way of the roast air exhaust.

Input welcome.

I had the same problem and I found the Huky to not be level.  I put a small piece of wood across the front of the Huky to level it and now the cooling tray slides up to the door without any issues.  The bowl does hit the needle valve if you don't turn it slightly to keep the legs from hitting it.

The chaff tray is upside down. Seems to work for me and easier to brush of the chaff between roasts.

A few pictures of my roasting set-up that includes a Huky with a cyclone, my Torrefattore and space in the middle for the 500 gram North when it arrives.  I like having a permanent space for my roasters so I'm ready to roast at any time.  They are housed in a small roasting shed on my back patio.

Title: Re: Show your roasting setup/roast cart
Post by: Cammie on February 05, 2016, 09:35:30 PM
Thanks all.  I will take some more detailed pictures and explain how I use cyclones.  I did use original Huky parts (fan, funnel, sieve and stainless steel connectors) to put together the cyclone.  The blue cyclone itself is very nicely built and came from an eBay seller. The combination and placement of parts gives me a decent seal/cyclonic effect so that the bulk of the chaff during a roast is deposited into the collection bucket.  I use a Variac (under the counter) to control air flow. If I'm remembering correctly, I reversed the face plate on the cyclone fan so that it would be secure at the top of the cyclone and have air flow going in the right direction.  I also made sure the seals were not too tight since I still need to be able to lift up the pipe connecting the cyclone to the roaster to drop the beans and help cool off the roaster more quickly.

I received my Huky (SN 1024) about three weeks ago and have been meaning to post a picture of my setup . . . but I've been roasting coffee instead!  The first day, I roasted 17 one-pound batches with an additional 10 lbs in two more sessions since then.  As a novice, I thought it best to do a bunch up front to get familiar with the roaster  (better than roasting only 1 lb a week for the next 5 months).  I have found no shortage of willing recipients for my coffee -- colleagues, neighbors, teach appreciation gifts, etc.  Already had 2 people ask me about buying it!

Thank you to everyone at this forum for the knowledge sharing!

Perfection Joey, beautiful setup!
My Huky T arrived last week, and I'm still arranging the pieces left, right and center to see which (permanent, indoor) arrangement would be most ergonomic and logical in relation to the positioning of the table and exhaust hole (in the wall towards outside).  Bearing in mind I'm left-handed, I notice that most Hukies have the T-pipe facing left:  mine will be facing starboard.  The Variac, computer and (for now) Center thermometer however, will be positioned at the left.
I expect to have my setup finished within a week or so, and by that time I'll try to find out how to post those beautiful pictures you've so generously shared!
Greetings,
Paul

You might want to consider adding a gas shut off where you can reach it without running out the door and around to the back of the building in case of any emergency.  I turn the gas off both at the stove and at the tank after every session -- belt and suspenders  ;)

Ahh so "reply 123" is what you are referring to.  I need to get used to the Huky before I start getting into automation.  I'm curious as to how hard it could be....
