Finally Full pound roasts
« on: April 12, 2016, 06:32:47 PM »
I have been really surprised to find out that roasting a full pound (454 gm) is a whole lot easier than roasting 350 gm.  I don't know why since 350 was so much easier than 227 (which is where I started), but there is something more forgiving about the roaster with more beans in it.

Amazing.

Sometimes a larger charge can result in less control changes.

I think the larger bean mass gives the roast and the roaster a momentum (the larger mass of the beans can absorb and hold on to the heat), which keeps the roast rolling, as compared to smaller charges where you have to constantly balance the gas and air settings to get to the profile you aim for.
I've seen the very same advice on many places, MillCityRoasters videos comes to mind. I.e. start learning with "full" or "sweet spot" charges, as the roaster is more forgiving, as you've noticed.
Now, dare I roast even lighter?

Hi Susan,

Glad to hear you got it right!

Did you get any tipping or facing on your beans?

Can you post your settings or profile? =)

Nope.  I've never had any tipping or scorching with the IR stove/perforated drum.
and
Nope.  I don't save my profiles anymore.  Sorry.

My first few roasts were all 1 lb. Then I split a lb and tried  1/2 lb.   My temperatures were all over the place and roasted way faster than I would have liked. I'm sure after a few more I could make adjustments but I found 1/2 lb made for erratic probe readings.   After I finish my lb sample bags I'll probably try charges at around 400 grams.

I always roast a pound. Why? I don't know. Easier accounting I guess. I buy by the pound so I roast by the pound. It doesn't seem to me that I get errant results.

Hi Susan,

I'm little confused. Maybe there is something wrong with the stove? I do get big orange flames when I go to 3.5kPA i.e. It only goes real IR when the stove is on low settings...like when finishing the roast.

Any thoughts?

Yes, there are some small flames when going "full blast" dancing on top og the burner, but that's really nothing compared to a normal open flame burner. There are still no flames as such really touching the beans, even though they are reaching for the drum.

Yes, true...I got those flames only at "full blast" as you say. I mean 3.5 Kpa, they kinda' big...the rest is OK!
