Traveling when a coffee snob.....
« on: April 30, 2016, 07:40:25 AM »
This doesn't even include my water kettle.  I have a bag dedicated to coffee.  I'm sure I'm not the only one?

If that is a ceramic pour over, you are a brave soul.

My travel kit is a Feldgrind and Clever Dripper.

You're not the only one. I bring a Clever Coffee Dripper or sometimes just the Aeropress, plus a thermos, hot water kettle and Lido. Road trips are... gooood.

Yeah I wouldn't fly with it but this is a road trip

I was hoping to avoid my usual travel gear haul, but my meetings start at 7am and the good coffee stops open at 7 am.

What's a coffee snob to do?

That's a rip off in my opinion. Much easier and cheaper to put your own travel setup together.

I travel for work (airplane) almost every week.  Typically I bring a canvas tote in my carry-on, with AP/Porlex, 100g drug dealer scale, and a couple bags of beans.  Sometimes I bring my plastic Melitta dripper cone as well (though that requires measuring out water which is a hassle).  Most offices have some sort of hot water access, or I'll just take a coffee mug and heat the water in a microwave.  On road trips I bring my Jetboil and pour-over cone.  Hotels are tough because all you usually get is that single-shot coffee maker (outside of Asia, where you always get a kettle), which can heat up water but it's always a crapshoot.  But for me a kettle is just too much of a hassle on an airplane, so I usually have to deal with whatever the water situation happens to be.

has anyone took their Lido in a carry on? Just wondering if the TSA would like to mess with you over it

I took my Lido 3 to Maui a few months back and had no problems.  I had it in my check in luggage so I'm not sure about carry on.
Sorry, just re-read your question and my response was pretty useless.

That is expensive and no way to heat the water!  I already have the blue bottle bonmac dripper!

I agree  :)

By the way I'm here in Vegas, in a Hotel room, with my Bonavita 500ml boiler, porlex grinder, kalita glass dripper and paper filters, brewista 600ml server, also the aeropress and 2 bags of Ethiopia Kochere Gr1 freshly roasted.

Of course I could only bring this apparatus because I was driving. For a plane trip I'm still not well prepared (I think)

I am flying with Lido 2 for a year already, in my carry on luggage or a backpack. EU, States, Central and South America. Usually they ask questions, but never tryied to take it from me. Although the last time they wanted to expropriate my cupping spoon... XD

Never before was the importance of grind quality more apparent to me than on this last trip.  I have a Rocky grinder at home and while it isn't the ultimate grinder it is great for doing drip/pour over  (what I do mostly).  I bought this grinder which looks to be the same as a Hario Slim grinder with a different name.

It took a bit to get the grind that I wanted but I just could never make a cup like I have at home.  It may be time to bite the bullet and get a Lido.
