NG & 500 Charge Weight
« on: September 12, 2016, 08:15:32 AM »
All,

I am looking to do ~500g charges and I have a location in my basement with ventilation as well as a natural gas line. I have been reading a lot in the past week about initial weight charging as well as heat requirements. Thanks to this forum and HBs, I think I got an answer but would like to verify it with you all.

For 500g charges, will I need a NG burner with an output of more than 20,000 BTUs and a burner less than 6.5", correct? I was looking at this option because it can do 35k BTUs but according to the salesman, the outer-ring is 7.5".

Would 15,000 BTUs be okay for a full 500g charge?

Trying to figure all this out to get a somewhat permanent location for roasting.

Thanks!

Not sure to  be of good help. But I could roast 500 grs of green with the IR burner and butane gaz.

Roasts were longest than with a lower charge, but it works.

While people have found other solutions, the Huky is built for the IR burner. As LTB says, roasting 500g is doable with a little bit of patience.
The benefits with the IR burner is that it already has both a needle valve and a gague built in. (Ok, many opt to switch to a better (read: larger) gague, but it works.) Most of the other cookers have very rudimental controls (much in the same way as the IR burner, which basically have three settings but the rebuild my Mr Li makes it very controllable and precise).
Now, dare I roast even lighter?

I suggest this one22k BTU.  You can build your stand for the HUKY around it.  I would suggest a design that can adjust the height of the burner so you can determine what distance from the drum the flame can rise.  Plenty power and you must not leave such a gas appliance or any gas roaster run unattended.
