Received 500T - Coming from a HotTop
« on: November 18, 2016, 11:12:46 AM »
Just received my 500T setup.  Solid drum, extra cooling setup, and ET, BT, and MET all digital.  Mr. Li forgot MET, so is sending separately.  I have the Phiget and the recommended Variac knock off from ebay.  Will setup this Saturday and start roasting!  I have the current HotTop and will likely sell.

I will use Artisan.  Would appreciate any advice on how to track changes to heat and fan since it was automatic with the HotTop.  Any changes made to HotTop directly showed up in Artisan.  Not sure how that works with this Huky setup.

The fun begins (well, probably with some frustrations, but anyhow... :) )
There's some very good documetation on Artisan setup in the resources and downloads sections of this forum, mostly (all?) compiled by Susan. The basic setup is derived from the setup for the HotTop, so you should feel at home.
The easiest way of recording the heat and fan settings are by using the sliders on the left. They won't be in "real time", but once you get the hang of it there's only a couple of seconds delay 'tween the actual and recorded event. Coming from the HotTop you should be familiar with this approach.
An alternative setup is predesigned buttons, with the "typical" settings that you find yourself using. Ex. As I always use 3 "fixed" settings for the fan. I'd better make buttons for these settings (but I havn't so far). The same can be done for heat settings, but (depending on charge size) more different heat settings are used, maybe the slider is better for that.
Now, dare I roast even lighter?

Thanks.  Just noticed Mr. Lii for forgot the exhaust bowl, too.  That's standard, right?

Here's a picture of everything I received.  Mr. Li forgot the MET probe.  But, I apparently forgot to order the exhaust bowl.  I see in some others pictures a black elbow.  Does that come with exhaust bowl or do I buy that on my own from the hardware store?

Thanks,
Stan

Well, the good part is that the exhaust bowl (probably) is a shelved item, like a temp.probe, so these items should be with you soon.
That black elbow isn't something that comes with the bowl. It's most probably a silicon connector, as used in various car applications, usually for the intercooler of turbocharged cars. The hose running out of the exhaust bowl is 2.5", which is a bit quirky (to find good and cheap exhaust hoses for) as well as the fact it's coming out very close to the table or whatever it stands on. Having e.g a 2.5" - 3" angled connector makes life much more easy.
Now, dare I roast even lighter?

You want to have one fan and one exhaust bowl. You seem to have two fans. Also, everyone using a solid drum also uses the 72 RPM motor. According to your profile, you have the 42 RPM motor.  I have the perforated drum so I'm not sure how important it is but you should be aware of that.

Hmmm....I think most of us have two fans and one exhaust bowl.  One fan goes under the exhaust bowl and the other is used for cooling.

Oh, sorry. I thought the exhaust bowl came with the fan. I'm glad you caught my error!

Hey guys,

I am just about to order the 500T. I am currently using a whirley pop and was going to upgrade to a Hottop,   But when I came across the huky I think it's a no brainer. I new to the forum so I'm sure there is a better place to post this and I'm sorry in advance. What does everyone recommend ordering to get me going. As I said I'm really new so as much as you can tell me I would really appreciate! Thanks guys.

Oh also I have seen a lot of people talk about free shipping is that still happening or what qualifies that. Thanks!!

Dustin.

Dustin.

Free shipping?  Never heard of such a thing.  There is a list of all of the current prices (including the price of shipping) in the Before You Buy section of Resources.

You should spend some time reading to decide whether you want a perforated or a solid drum HUKY.  That is really the most critical decision you have to make before you place an order (unless you decide to buy one of each, which many of us did and which I now would advise against, although it's no skin off my nose if you go that route.)

Enjoy your reading.

Thanks for note on drum speed.  I had wrong number, should be 72.  I have the solid drum.  Just finished roasting 8 batches today.  Couldn't wait for exhaust bowl, so got some practice.  This picture is from the last batch I did an Ethiopian 250g.  Was starting to play with gas to control RoR.  Not perfect, but getting use to it after using a HotTop for almost 2 years.

Thanks SusanJom!

I have been trying to figure out what drum to go with and I can't find anything that is strongly suggesting over the other. What would you suggest?

I can't help you out there.  As far as I can tell, everyone who uses a solid drum is glad and everyone who uses a perforated drum is glad.   We've seen a few conversions, but I don't know that there has been any sort of trend.

Looks good, was that a washed or natural? 1/2lb batches can be somewhat tricky, but I'd stick with it until your satisfied and then try something larger.
