Hi fellow Huky'ites,

Thank you for having me join in the wonderful world of roasting with Huky!
I have been an observer for the past few months and decided to finally join in. I am new to roasting and have learnt on 1 kg commercial roasters and want to start roasting regularly and develop a further appreciation for the great coffees!

I feel ready to purchase a Huky and commence my new adventure! I have read a few separate threads about the checklist etc and would like to the  to order the best kit to be future proof and ensure safe home use. I have two separate queries:
- What would be the checklist for importing one to Australia and an estimate of the final price in Au dollars?
- Anyone in Australia interested in ordering one soon?

I am unsure and was under the impression that model T superseded the previous J.

I've only use the solid drum, so can't comment from a practical standpoint.

I've used both the T and the J version. After a year with the T I reverted to the J model, this for two reasons.
The first is that I don't find myself in a hurry when roasting. Also I usually charge (start) my roasts at a way lower temp than where the roaster is when finishing the roast. (It will take at least 5 minutes to have the roaster "coast" down to my intended charge temp.)Thus I find no meaning in having the T model, which is constructed with "back-to-back roasting" in mind.
Second, I do like the exhaust to be decently leak-proof, which isn't the case with the T-model. No big deal, but still something to consider.

On the perforated vs. solid drum debate, I've used both and would say that the difference isn't that big. Basic roasting principles apply to both types of setup, but airflow plays a bigger part of the roasting strategy with the perf.setup. You can (and will) get excellent results with either setup. (It's very difficult to make a fair comparison unless you have two roasters at hand and have recent experience (say a hundred roasts or so) with both setups.)

Mr. Li is no longer offering the J version of the HUKY, so there is no decision to be made on that point (unless you are able to source a J version used).

I agree with your comments and see the point regarding the solid vs perforated as it will come down to the roasting style and personal preference.  And yes it is hard to compare the two, having said that, based on your comment,  the perforated might provide more control to regulate the bean temperature as I prefer medium roasts and prefer more tempered development.

I wish I could see one in action here and maybe give it a go a few times!
