How about a basic instructions thread?
« on: January 10, 2015, 11:54:02 AM »
Maybe somebody could make an abc 123 newbie walk through type instructions thread...

A little step by step guide from fire up to bean dump.

With some luck I'll be needing to read that next week.  8)

That's a great idea. I volunteer to start one, which I'll post and open to editing, adding and supplementing as necessary. I'm guessing it will be tricky because there are so many ways to skin a cat, so to speak.
Though I'm happy to start it I will gladly hand it over to anyone who wants to write it. Speak up!

As an outline: (A discussion of these elements with a given, successful profile image, with segmented highlights)
Intro: Brief HUKY description, Solid versus Perf drum, curing and burn-in, heat sources, chaff collection and tubing arrangements.
Measure Charge: discuss charge volumes and their effects on heat and overall roasting approach (eg. Soft, SHB, Decaf, Natural versus Washed)
Preheat: How preheating and drop times affect coffees (profiles, drying)
Drying Phase: Role of heat and time to 1C
1C and Development: How HUKY can me manipulated to vary profiles
Drop and Cooling: HUKY 'Dance', methods to cool, exhaust, rest/degas/storage, final cupping results.

Hah! I wish I had the ambition. While that would be a great thing to have I believe John was thinking (and I'm thinking) more along the lines of the key moves one has to make to help new folks prepare for their first roast. As John said:

That's what I'm working on now.

LOL.
How many words?
How many points of view?
These are BIG topics, not parts of a "How to Get Started" article.
The very idea makes me tired....and I just got up :-))))

Thanks again John for the prompt. I put the Basic Roasting Instructions in the Resources area so that it's easily accessible.
If anyone has suggestions for additions or corrections to the guide please post them here in this thread and we'll edit the article itself to reflect new information. Thanks!

Is the resource area a special permissions forum?

I don't see it.

Ha! I think the outline was more ambitious than the article!  :P Really just a few sentences of explanation of a profile graph, and why certain steps were selected (impacts of differences)...just a bit more cohesive than some of the descriptions we already see...no...if'n it won't fit on a page (or two) I won't read it either!  8)

OK I can see those sections now. And I understand why they weren't in my view before.

Was just going to ask you to take a look. I've got a nice big screen on my Note 4 and I'm fine with the change, however most people probably have a smaller [phone] screen so if you think it's too cluttered let us know.

EXCELLENT start! Naturally, I'd love so see a wee bit more expansion of some those points...but this guide is already a great Quick Start. THANK YOU!
