Determining batch size
« on: January 27, 2015, 12:36:20 PM »
I'm starting to think about batch size.

Initially I figured I'd do 500g batches but then I realized it's only because I can not because I want to.  I think I read somewhere that 325g batches are optimal for the Huky.

I'm currently on 250g batches so honestly 325 or 500 is "more". It's probably smart to stick with one or the other to learn on but Is there any advantage of a particular  batch size on the Huky?

Personally, I always stick with 227g charge mass for 3 main reasons.

1. Green beans are sold in pounds, and 0.5 pound is a common denominator.
2. I prefer variety, and blend small batches with various origins/roast levels/mature days for different brewing methods.
3. Consistent and convenient.  Depending on the position of the BT probe, it may give significantly different readouts with different charge mass, and not to mention all of the power/fan levels during a roast.  I can simplify these variables by sticking with the same charge mass.  In addition, I use OXO POP Container Rectangle - 0.5 Quart to store roasted beans, and the size fit.   :D

Sweet spot for me is 400grams...I've tried lower and higher but always get best results at 400...Probably just a coincidence.

I run 500g batches almost every time. Plenty of heat and air to get me into 1c before 10 min always, as fast as 8 sometimes. Less than 400 might not hit the BT probe enough to get you a good reading.
