(probable) Hardware Issue with CENTER 301
« on: April 26, 2016, 11:15:51 PM »

   Hey guys! How's it goin?

I'm new to the forum (just introduced myself, in fact). Glad to be here :)

Quick question: Has anyone encountered a hardware problem with the CENTER? (More specifically, the CENTER 301).

I've tried everything possible (both, HukyForum guided & otherwise). Nothing seems to be working. All evidence now points to faulty CENTER hardware.

   Thanks!
   Cheers!
   Mihir.

Well, apart from that you're using a Center 301, you are not saying what hardware you're using.
But I take it that the meter does work, giving correct readings and the problem is connecting it to your Windows 10 laptop and Artisan.
If so, it sounds like nothing happens in Artisan and you get some kind of error message, e.g. "Serial Exception: Unable to open serial port" (on top left, just under the application menues and the few icons.) The typical scenario is that you've either didn't install the driver software. (It should be installed, but not running.) See: https://www.hukyforum.com/index.php/topic,450.0.html or if you've done that, there is a problem with the serial to usb cable. (Did you order the dedicated one with the Center meter or are you relying on one from the cupboard?) It's a common problem with the serial/usb cable where only the dedicated one from Mr. Li (or a similar Omega brand cable) works.
Now, dare I roast even lighter?

Hey John! Thanks for the response!

By "hardware problem". I'm referring to the CENTER itself (maybe an issue with the output port.

I found the USB cable sold by Mr.Li to be a bit expensive and found one in a store here for a fraction of the price (I had no idea there were "dedicated" aux-to-USB cables). I'm guessing this could be the issue coz the CENTER itself is working well otherwise.

Mr.Li sent me a link for the driver download and I've checked it with several PCs (I've even checked the cable. It's fine).

I'm gonna try to find an OMEGA cable online.

   Thanks a bunch!
   Cheers!
   Mihir.

Hi!
I guess that Mr. Li can put the USB/serial cable in a normal letter and send it to you. Then it will not cost much more than the actual cost of the cable and a couple of post stamps. Mr. Li is normally very quick to send the items he haves on the shelf (spare cables, ThermoCouplers and such).
Now, dare I roast even lighter?

Hey, edtbjon!

Thanks again for the support! .. and sorry for the late response.

To be honest, I've been enjoying my experience with a pen and paper so much, I haven't even thought about contacting Mr.Li for the USB cable :) ... however, the letter idea is great!
I've also been a bit preoccupied with reading up on the chemistry of roasting and how I could figure that info into my roasts with the HUKY. I'm now thinking: screw Artisan, I need a gas chromatograph  ;D

The USB cable Mr. Li sells for the Center is not a regular USB cable. It's actually a USB to Serial converter (or Serial to USB converter as you will).
You will need that specific cable and the driver that goes with it, otherwise it will not work.
