Question About Phidget TC
« on: May 26, 2016, 02:37:16 PM »
Hi All,

So excited... I just ordered a Huky  ;D! I have been roasting with a ceramic pot for the past year with moderate success. I wanted to up my roasting game and decided to splurge on a Huky. This is my order:

Confirm your order:
500T 48rpm Perforated drum------1180 USD with quick connect.
Propane ir stove-------------------------99 USD
Exhaust hood-----------------------------49 USD
Extra probe for MET--------------------16 USD
Extra sieve/tray---------------------------16 USD
Extra fan-----------------------------------48 USD
Extra funnel-------------------------------14 USD
Extra motor set 72rpm------------------78 USD
Extra drum---------------------------------98 USD
ET probe come with Huky

After some research, I decided on going with the Phidget 1048, but I have a few questions about the probes:
1.  The Huky is being shipped with Mr. Li's TC's, they should work with the phidget correct?
2.  If I wanted to order an extra TC from phidget, which one would I go with? This is the one I was looking at: http://www.phidgets.com/products.php?category=35&product_id=TMP4106_0
Is this the correct length (11 cm probe) for the huky?
3.  I ordered with the analog ET (tbh, it's because I liked the look), but I asked Mr. Li to include the digital probe as well.  Is this easy to swap out, I read that it is an adapter or something? I asked him a couple times but never got an answer.

Thanks in advance for any help.
I am sure I will be on here religiously after I receive my roaster.

Hi and welcome. The waiting part is the worst, we've all been there.
First, when you get the Huky, hide the extra drum etc really well. Changing drums will not ever solve any problems with the roasting, only experience will. I did change drums after starting up with a solid drum setup, but I waited for a full year before I ordered the extra drum etc from Mr Li.
The TCs that comes with the Huky are standard K-type TCs and they have standard yellow connectors on them. These are very easy to remove with a small screwdriver and then you can connect them (bare wire) into the Phidget.
If you need a spare TC for the Huky, get it from Mr. Li. He'll send it to you in an envelope.
If you got it through to Mr. Li that you wanted an extra ET TC, it should come with an adapter (brass). (If memory serves me correctly...) You just unscrew the analogue meter and replace it with the TC. I have never had an analogue meter in that place, but I've disassembled the Huky a few times. The BT (and the MET) are secured by nuts on the inside of the frontplate, i.e if you want to replace those TCs you have to disassemble the whole roaster. But as the ET is secured in place by its adapter you simply screw it in.
Now, dare I roast even lighter?

Another option is to get a TC with a 1/4" NPT thread, ungrounded. I got one from ebay very cheap, e.g. http://www.ebay.com/itm/380917844474 This works fine and will screw into the same hole the thermometer is screwed into (easy to unscrew, just use a spanner)
