Maintenance -
« on: June 21, 2016, 11:39:52 AM »
Hi Guys,

I have been roasting for a number of months now & want to perform some maintenance on the huky. What's the best method. Cheers. Is the syringe that was provided for greasing the bearings?

Cheers

The syringe is for greasing the bearings. I'll be interested in knowing a better way than what I do. I just hold the tip of the syringe to the bearings while the drum is turning and squirt some in. And hope.

I tear down my Huky every 100 roasts or so. Then I can take the bearings out and give them a more thorough clean and re-grease. Else I give the bearings a small squirt of grease every 20 roasts or so. (Don't forget that there's a bearing in the back too, which is much more difficult to get to, hence my tear down practice.)
But even though the bearings are small, they are very sturdy and reliable, probably very much over-sized for the job and the relatively light load the drum and coffee puts on it. As they are ceramic they are very stable in size regardless of temperature. (I got me a spare set of bearings from Mr. Li, but I don't think that I'll ever need them.)
Now, dare I roast even lighter?

Cheers guys.. I keep intending to do a deep clean of the roaster but get distracted by roasting :)

I have squirted the grease on the bearings while the motor is rotating but I fear this is inadequate.

Must set aside an evening where I can clean the roaster..

I used a toothpick to feed the grease into the bearings after squirting the grease onto the surface. This "packs" the bearings and I'm able to add more grease. Anyone using any other grease than that supplied?

I'm with edtbjon. I like to take apart after 100 roasts and thoroughly clean and repack the bearings. Had to have Mr. Li send another syringe as the first time I tried to apply to a hot roaster! What was I thinking...
