Atmospheric Burner Suggestions
« on: July 09, 2016, 06:53:58 PM »
Hey, folks.

We'd really like to find a good atmospheric burner to replace the stock infared burner sent by Mr. Li.  We much prefer the responsiveness thereof.  Does anyone have suggestions on an atmospheric burner -- in natural gas -- that would do well?  Needs to be fairly similar in size to the original burner.

We also don't really care for the somewhat odd controls on the original burner.  Just curious about what may be out there that would work.

Thanks!

I feel like the community would benefit from a more detailed response. I know that the following are important:
  • Single burner
  • High pressure regulator
  • Valve

The question is then how do those go together with the huky? What parts are the best?

Gee golly whizzakers, this post and maybe this whole thread is incomprehensible to me.  Maybe someone can explain what the issues are here?  I don't understand what the questions are so I can't begin to suggest an answer.

The original question had to to with sourcing an "atmospheric burner", but it seems clear that no one here has any experience with whatever that is.  Or, if anyone does have that experience that they aren't sharing.

Sorry, MapleSyrup, I can't tell if your recent post is related to an "atmospheric burner" or to the original IR burner or to an open flame or ????   And even then, what is the/are the question/s???

I guess that the OP is looking for "more control" with the heat, which maybe could be achieved with some kind of open flame burner (i.e. "atmospheric burner"). I guess most of us opted for the IR burner as the Huky was built to fit nicely on top of it. There are examples here and over at HomeBarista, where the users have gone for different stoves etc. But (as far as my memory serves me) it wasn't because the IR burner was niether slow (in response) nor insufficient, but rather that they wanted to use their kitchen stove.
Most reports on e.g. cajun burners have been disappointing. Way too much heat and no needle valve to fine adjust.
While the IR burner seems a bit tricky to operate with the big black turn knob, I only turn it on once per session, igniting it to the "3 flames" position and leaving it there. I then only use the blue needle valve.
Apart from that I'm a bit puzzled by the "responsiveness" issue. I'd say that's an indication of "overdoing" the control(s). I fully agree that neither the graph/RoR nor the use and adjustment of heat and air as such really is of importance, but the final cup of coffee is the only thing that matters. But as we discuss heaters, I'd like to share how I typically roast (see the included Artisan graph) with 2 changes of the heat and 2 changes in airflow. These roasts are really easy to duplicate (should they be that good tasting so that I want more of that coffee...). Now, I gradually got to this pattern from a much more "intricate" pattern, with many more control points. Try to find parts of the roast where "I could have made these two or three changes in one single change...". I guess that if you need "responsivness" you are trying to manage and control the roast for each and every miniscule change of RoR, which IMHO isn't a good way to roast.
Now, dare I roast even lighter?

Oh my :o
If the OP is looking for information on the open flame or cajun style burners, there is lots of stuff on the forum.  I misunderstood and thought 'atmospheric burner' was something altogether different.

Breifine, you should try searching using those terms, and especially for posts by Johnny4LSU who supplied some of the earliest and most enthusiastic information about using a Cajun stove.

Edited:  Amazing timing.   Johnny just posted a link over at HB to the Cajun burner he recommends.  Here's the conversation at HB

In addition to the stove there needs to be a needle valve, 1/4" Tee, and pressure gauge.

I have no qualms with my open burner needle valve gauge setup.  Very similar to Cajun Cooker.  And I can see that it is no better than the recommended IR stove with added gauge.
