I do believe it's time, input please.
« on: December 31, 2016, 10:48:13 PM »
Been using my Behmor for 4+ years and it's nearing the end of it's life.  I like the idea of getting more personal with my roasts.  Pressing a button and adding/subtracting time isn't doing it for me anymore.

This brings me to my list of goodies I will need.  After reading others I think I'm close but by all means please add or subtract anything to help.

Huky 500T with quick connect option
Solid drum with 72rpm motor
Digital thermocouple for ET
Extra thermocouple for MET
Extra thermocouple for backup
Propane IR stove
Exhaust bowl
Extra sieve/tray
Extra fan
Extra funnel
Center 304
USB cable for Center 304

Is there a need for the perforated drum and motor also?  Don't really want to add $176 for something that I really don't need.  Would the perforated drum be a better choice?

Purchased elsewhere:
3A Variac for fan speed

If I am missing anything please jump in.  Now it's off to work on my wife about the "funding" of my new project :)

ETA:  Extra thermocouple for backup...thx for tip :)

Welcome to the club! :)
The list looks fine. The only thing that I'd add would be an extra thermocouple as it's about the only thing which wears out after time. (It's the bean temp thermocouple which sits in the bean mass which I find to be the "sensitive" one...) I've never heard of a motor breakdown, but if you want to feel safe, you could order an extra motor. (It's a bit fiddly to exchange, but you probably never have to do it. I just mentioned it as a "just in case", somewhat like a spare wheel in a car.) Those items are $18 per piece, not a big deal.

You absolutely don't need the perforated drum etc. Many of us have both sets, but usually ends up using only one of them. Personally, I ordered my Huky with just a solid drum and didn't feel the urge to test a perforated drum for a year, when I ordered a T upgrade kit along with a perf. drum. (I've since returned to the solid drum setup with which I'm more comfortable.)
I think it's a good idea not to order both drums, as you can focus on learning about the roaster and roasting with the setup at hand. You will get good results with either setup and these results comes from how you manage the roaster. I'll even stick my neck out to state that you can never ever fix a roast problem by swithing setups.
Now, dare I roast even lighter?

What type of lamp is everyone using.  I don't want to spend a ton but as I understand it the lamp is an important part.

What 'lamp' are you asking about?

I think it's one to check the roast when you use the tryer?  I've heard before you need a good lamp.  I could be and am probably wrong :)  I haven't seen any in the pictures here but think I read it somewhere.

welcome here !

A good lamp mean with enough lumens, good area, less shadow, and quite neutral or daylight color temperature.
For exemple, mine is really bad in almost all of thoses things !! :p

Well it's done and in Mr Li's hands now.  Can't wait to get it here.  I've been watching videos on YouTube that are explaining each phase of the roast and what to look for and what you shouldn't see.  This is so much more involved than my Behmor and I can't wait to get my feet wet.
