New Artisan document added to the Downloads section of the forum
« on: September 03, 2015, 10:03:13 AM »
JavaBuzz has contributed an excellent document on setting up and tuning Artisan.  It is now available in the Downloads section of the forum.  BASIC SETUP and TUNING GUIDE.

THANK YOU Joel !!!!

Awesome! JavaBuzz explains how to tune Artisan and explains the mystifying terminology used in the check boxes.

Thank you everyone (and special thanks to SusanJoM, hankua, and Gregr)!

Documentation on a lot of Artisan's configuration is a bit sparse, so I tried to pool together what information I could find on some of the settings and make an easy to understand document.

I also tried to make the document relatively easy to follow for new Artisan users, but at the same time provide some simplified "advanced" information on settings, for the more inquisitive and experienced Artisan users.

I spent a lot of time researching, testing, and creating the document, so hopefully it will be helpful to many people. If it is helpful, that makes the time and effort worthwhile. :)

I've got a question about "Smooth2"- what is it?

It's under Tools>Extras>Graph

JK (Johnny K) runs Artisan with this box checked which brings up the question.

From what I recall, it's a setting that is an alternate to Smooth Spikes (does something similar). I believe in the post I read, Marko leaned toward recommending just using Smooth Spikes. I think Smooth2 was a contribution by someone else, and not even Marko knew 100% how it worked.

I might be wrong on some of the details above though. If I come across the post again, I'll add a link for it.

And here's the info/post (looks like my memory was pretty close to accurate):
http://coffeetroupe.com/artisandocs/

Search the page for "Smooth2" and you'll see Marko's comments on the subject. Also explains the Window setting (an adjustment for Smooth2).

Being he's kept the option in newer versions, I'd say doesn't hurt to try it out. I don't remember seeing much difference when I tested it several months ago, so I stuck with Smooth Spikes (but might be interesting to try it out again now that I know my temp probes and meter better).

I had both boxes checked; so it's one or the other not both?

Here is the question that was posed to Marko:
when do I use the smooth2 and whether you either check smooth spikes or smooth 2 and not both?

And here is Marko's response
The smooth2 flag activates an alternative (more complex) smoothing algorithm donated by some user believing it to be more efficient. Its level of smoothing is controlled by the “Window” setting. I am not convinced of that approach. Anyhow, “Smooth spikes” filter is only applied to the temperature curves and activates a rather harmless extra filter before the actually smoothing is applied that will only get active on spikes. This can safely be left activated.

Which makes me think that we are supposed to choose between Smooth and Smooth2.  I'm gonna stick with the original.

Agreed, probably best to check only one at a time in case they conflict. However, if you don't see any weirdness/issues, probably not the end of the world if both are checked either.

Anytime you smooth you're losing accuracy (and often increasing lag), so you want to find the best balance between accuracy and just enough smoothing to maximize graph readability, without hiding roast issues, causing too much lag, etc.
