Daave's Roasting Setup
« on: January 18, 2016, 01:48:19 PM »
I thought it could be helpful to others if I did an in-depth post of my current roasting setup. Like everyone else here, I've put way too much thought into each aspect of my roasting area :)

My Huky Order
Huky 500J
Infrared Stove
Exhaust Hood
Extra Probe (MET)
Extra sieve/tray
Extra Fan
Extra Funnel
Extra motor 48rpm
BT &ET probe come with Huky (Analog ET replaced with probe)

Roaster accessories
Phidget 1048_0 + case (I bought mine from Mill City Roasters since Phidget was OOS, but I think it's cheaper to buy direct if possible)
Variac
LPG4-D8122N gas pressure gauge (The threads don't completely match, so bust out your wrench with a long handle so you have enough torque!)
American Weigh Scales AMW-SC-2KG Digital Pocket Scale
Cheap Walmart 1 liter plastic measuring cup
Wooden Spoon
Small Shop Vac
20 gallon propane tank

Roaster Computer
Intel NUC i3-4010U (Any new NUC is fine... this is just the model I bought)
Crucial MX200 250GB mSATA Internal Solid State Drive
Kingston Technology 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L RAM
Anker Ultra Slim 2.4G Wireless Compact Keyboard
Etekcity Scroll M910 Wireless Vertical Mouse + 3M Precise Mouse Pad
Windows 7
24-inch computer monitor with a monoprice adjustable mount

Workbench Stuff
I built the my workbench with a coffee roasting nook as part of the design
2" Grommets
3" Dryer duct & foil tape from Home Depot
3" Exaust Vent
Hole Saw Set for wood
Hole Saw Set for stucco
Artwork

And now for some pictures.

This is a wide shot of my roasting workbench.

This is my roasting corner.

A close-up of my Huky.

The gas gauge.

Here's a good shot showing how I routed the thermocouple cables. I made certain that my zip-ties don't touch the Huky.

Grommets.

Phidget.

There's the dryer duct going into a 3.5" hole I cut out.

My little computer. It runs incredibly well too, you'd never guess it's that small when you're using it since everything in Windows runs so snappy.

There's the dryer duct going to the exaust vent.

The new vent I installed is the one on the right.

your new vent is exactly the same as mine. In fact it even looks like you took a picture at my house!  ???  :D (If it weren't for the old vent at the left I would have my doubts... lol)

Nicely done! I like that setup, neat and clean.

Would you please post up a picture how you have the dryer vent connected to the exhaust bowl?

It's nothing special, just copious amounts of foil tape. Here's a close-up picture with chaff bits everywhere.

Fantastic setup!

I've read somewhere that style of ducting is flammable. Amazon has the semi-rigid 3" aluminum in 8' lengths for a reasonable price. I used to get it at HD, apparently was discontinued at my store.

Has anyone checked to temperature of the air at the connection of the vent hose? I am looking at several at McMaster Carr and I don't know what temperatures to expect.

Check out this post: https://www.hukyforum.com/index.php/topic,169.msg1541.html#msg1541

Apparently 155F was the max that edtbjon measured.

I definitely agree that I should replace the duct with something more permanent and safer. I actually purchased the rigid one from Lowes originally, but my run was too long and I ended up breaking the duct by stretching it too far.

Pressure gauge 0-375 kPa is OK? After reading, chickened out and ordered the 0-750 kPa gauge.

Nice setup, indeed. Don't have the extended J-tube manifold here, so have to arrange things a little differently, but looking at your ideas helps. Good job. :D

I switched to the 375 kpa guage and it's perfect for my needs.  I don't go beyond 375 and it's really easy to read as well as not being as overly sensitive as the one that came with the Huky.
